Baby, it’s COLD outside!

It probably wouldn’t be quite as bad if it wasn’t for the wind chill (-29? EEK). Usually I park in the same spot at work every day but with this cold weather, I’ve been taking the closest spot available. Even then, by the time you walk in the door your throat feels on fire and your nose is burning. It’s wicked. I need to fill my car with gas too… what a rotten day to have to do that!!

I bought some cuddl duds online so I could have a few layering items. My new black one is awesome except I have to roll the sleeves over so they aren’t quite so long. Super soft and I like the extra warmth when wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

I found a little chart that I had to post for those interested. I came across a huge list a couple years ago and taped it to the inside of my pantry but this is smaller and easier to read. If you try to avoid MSG the way I do, this might be helpful for you too:

When you look at this list and compare ingredients, you’ll be shocked at how much food contains MSG. I hate the overly generic ingredients like “Spices” and “Natural Flavoring”. I do my best but it doesn’t always work – even in organic foods. I’ve now drilled into Ben’s head that if it says “hydrolyzed” or “autolyzed” anything, he has to put it back on the shelf. Looking at this list, I need to get better with “yeast extract” because I’ve seen that quite a few times in things I buy. One more reason to not buy packaged foods, eh?

We had bought some Triscuits the other day for snacking. Usually we choose between the rosemary and the cracked pepper. Here’s the ingredient list for the rosemary flavor:

Ingredients: WHOLE WHEAT, SOYBEAN AND/OR PALM OIL, MALTODEXTRIN, SLAT, SPICES (INCLUDES ROSEMARY), MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE (FLAVOR ENHANCER), ONION POWDER, NATURAL FLAVOR, OLIVE OIL. CONTAINS WHEAT.

And here’s the ingredient list for the cracked pepper flavor:

Ingredients: WHOLE WHEAT, SOYBEAN AND/OR PALM OIL, MALTODEXTRIN, SODIUM CHLORIDE, BLACK PEPPER, ONION POWDER, GARLIC POWDER, MODIFIED CORNSTARCH, OLIVE OIL, NATURAL FLAVORS. CONTAINS WHEAT.

I’m assuming SLAT is a typo for Salt. Obviously looking at these the cracked pepper looks more logical but you can tell that with the maltodextrin and natural flavors… it’s quite possibly teeming with MSG too. Definitely not fair!

So if you’re a triscuit fan, like me. Opt for the orginal flavor triscuit. Not as much fun but a WAY better list of ingredients:

Ingredients: WHOLE WHEAT, SOYBEAN AND/OR PALM OIL, SALT. CONTAINS: WHEAT.

  3. Okay – I am cracking up on SLAT! Proofread fail! I wonder how many 100s of thousands of boxes are in stock before they get that type corrected. I don’t worry too much about MSG because of they types of foods I fill my diet with. I am way more concerned with sucralose because of the taste issue for me.

    • I always giggle when I find typos on restaurant menus – which is more common than you’d think!

      I used to really like sucralose when it first came out and then when I realized how bad it was, I switched to Stevia. You can find some nasty stevia out there though so that requires a bit of research, trial/error

  4. Freaking cold out! And I don’t even have to leave my house!
    My hubby got called at 5:30 this morning from his boss asking him to come in… now (he was suppose to go in at 7)… apparently there was a truck that wouldn’t start at Nestle and he had to go jump it. I feel so bad for all the people that have to work outside in this weather! Talk about freezing your butt off.
